Harbin Institute of Technology, Shenzhen

Shenzhen, Guangdong, China

About the university

Founded in 2002, the HIT Shenzhen campus is located in the Greater Bay Area of South China. It offers comprehensive degree programs at the undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral levels. It has 10 schools and 4 research centers, with research focusing on materials, intelligent equipment manufacturing, future information technology, artificial intelligence, smart cities, space science, marine engineering, and biopharmaceuticals. The campus aims to become an “internationalized, high-skilled, and research-oriented campus,” and its current emphasis is on revolutionizing higher education, attracting talent, and pioneering global education strategies.

**Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT) **was established in 1920 in Harbin, Heilongjiang, China. In 1954, HIT was among the six institutions designated as National Key Universities by China’s Ministry of Education (MOE). Presently, HIT is one of the nine schools in China’s University Union (C9). It is a university with science and engineering at its core, and it has expanded to include management, liberal arts, economics, law, and other disciplines. Renowned as “the cradle of engineers,” the university is proud of many firsts. HIT established China’s first School of Astronautics. It was the first Chinese university to develop and launch small satellites into circumlunar orbit independently. HIT was also the front-runner in achieving satellite–ground laser communications.Additionally, HIT developed China’s first interactive chess-playing computer, and it was the first Chinese university to produce arc- and spot-welding robots. HIT was the first university in the world to reveal the structure of HIV Viral Infectivity Factor (Vif). It was also the first university to achieve a significant breakthrough in supporting structural development for the world’s largest radio telescopes. China’s first human–machine in-orbit maintenance experiments on a space operator were also conducted by HIT.

At HIT, there are 22 schools, 86 undergraduate programs, 9 National Key Disciplines, and 7 National Key Labs. It also includes 38 members of the prestigious Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) on its staff. Eleven disciplines at HIT are ranked among the top 1% on the Essential Science Indicators (ESI) list, including materials science, computer science, and engineering. In 2020, HIT ranked No. 1 on U.S. News & World Report’s “Best Global Universities for Electrical and Electronic Engineering” list and No. 6 on its “Best Global Universities for Engineering” list, respectively. Since its beginning, HIT has always cultivated a strong international environment. Now HIT has signed academic cooperation agreements with 278 universities in 39 countries. These collaborations include student and faculty exchange programs, joint academic conferences, and scientific research cooperation. The “Greater HIT” strategy is translated into “One University, Three Campuses,” comprising the Harbin, Weihai, and Shenzhen campuses. HIT is steadily moving toward its goal of becoming a world-class university.

Harbin Institute of Technology, Weihai campus

Established in 1985, the HIT Weihai campus comprises 11 schools and 45 majors. Its “One-Blue/Two-Smarts/Three-Priorities/ Four-New Techs” system shows the campus’ strength areas: One Blue (blue ocean economics); Two Smarts (smart manufacturing and smart cities); Three Priorities (ocean engineering, marine science, and automotive engineering); and Four New Technologies (new generation information technology, new materials, new energy, and new environmental technologies). Its research and industry cooperation projects have led to hundreds of patents and contributed to both regional and national economic growth.

Accommodation

Harbin Institute of Technology, Shenzhen (HITSZ) provides on-campus accommodation primarily for registered international students, offering a safe, convenient, and well-managed living environment that supports academic life. University dormitories are located on or near campus, providing students with easy access to classrooms, laboratories, libraries, cafeterias, and other campus facilities

On-campus accommodation is available in single, double, and triple rooms, and room allocation is subject to availability at the time of registration. Monthly accommodation fees vary by room type: approximately 250 CNY per month for a triple room, 500 CNY per month for a double room, and up to 1,000 CNY per month for a single room. These fees are paid before arrival, per university instructions. Utilities and certain services may be billed separately, depending on university policy.

Dormitory rooms are typically equipped with basic amenities, including beds, desks, wardrobes, and internet access. Shared facilities may include bathrooms, laundry rooms, common study areas, and 24-hour security services. Students are expected to comply with dormitory management regulations, including rules related to hygiene, visitor access, quiet hours, and safety.

Due to limited on-campus capacity, accommodation cannot be guaranteed for all students. Some students—especially those who prefer greater privacy or apply late—may be required to rent off-campus housing. Off-campus accommodation is widely available around the Shenzhen campus, though rental costs are typically higher and depend on location, room size, and living conditions. Students choosing off-campus housing are responsible for arranging contracts, deposits, and utilities independently.

It is important to note that scholarships offered by HITSZ mainly cover tuition fees, and accommodation costs are generally paid by students separately, unless otherwise specified in an individual scholarship award. Students are advised to prepare sufficient funds in advance to cover accommodation and living expenses during their stay.

Overall, HITSZ accommodation options aim to provide a comfortable, secure living environment while giving students the flexibility to choose between on-campus convenience and off-campus independence, based on their personal preferences and availability.
