About the university
Tianjin University (TJU), directly administered by China’s Ministry of Education, is one of the country’s most prestigious institutions of higher learning. Its origins trace back to Peiyang University, the first modern university in China, founded on October 2, 1895. Following a nationwide restructuring of higher education in 1951, it was renamed Tianjin University. In 1959, TJU was recognized as one of China’s first 16 National Key Universities, and later became part of the country’s elite “211 Project” and “985 Project”, aimed at developing world-class universities.
For more than a century, Tianjin University has played a vital role in national development, fostering countless high-level professionals and making significant contributions to economic and social progress. Guided by its motto, “Seeking Truth from Facts,” the university emphasizes precision in learning, strictness in teaching, and devotion to the nation. It upholds a spirit of patriotism, academic excellence, and innovation, nurturing talents dedicated to truth, cultural heritage, and national rejuvenation.
In 2014, the Ministry of Education approved the Constitution of Tianjin University, setting a clear direction for future development and educational reform. The following year, the Peiyangyuan Campus was officially opened, welcoming nearly 20,000 students, faculty, and staff, coinciding with TJU’s 120th anniversary celebration.
Today, Tianjin University continues to advance with a people-oriented vision, deepening reforms, strengthening its modern university system, and pursuing its mission to become a world-class university with Chinese characteristics and TJU’s unique spirit.
